The Shining

Suspense is created in the Shinning through the use of overly long scenes, very little cuts and the use of music that is repetitive. For example the sound similar to that of a beating heart could be created by beating a drum repeatedly or the chiming of bells that leads up to the end off the suspense. Another way that the movie creates tension and suspense is the scene where Danny is riding his tricycle around the hotel we can hear series of very loud sounds where Danny rides over wooden flooring and very soft sounds where he rides over carpet, this creates a huge contrast between volumes. The camera is also very low to the ground and following Danny from behind turning sharply as he goes round corners this introduces the audience to another location very suddenly making whatever they see all the more unexpected. Another key element in the scene was that the audience was shown the route that Danny took on his tricycle three times which builds up the expectations of the audience of what each part looks like if they were asked to visualise the route in their minds. This makes the point where Danny comes across the two girls who are obviously ghosts all the more effective as it breaks the audiences expectations.
